Scratching posts

The ideal scratching post or scratching board combines your cat's preferences with the available space and your interior style. By taking into account the scratching position, material, stability, and location, you increase the chance that your cat will enjoy using its new scratching spot.

Each cat has its own preferences. Some cats prefer to scratch vertically on a tall scratching post, while others prefer to scratch horizontally on a scratching board.

A scratching post: ideal for cats that like to scratch vertically and want to fully stretch out while doing so. A sturdy, tall scratching post offers sufficient resistance and can also serve as a climbing and lookout spot.

A scratching board: suitable for cats that prefer to scratch horizontally. A scratching board generally takes up less space, making it ideal for smaller homes.

A cardboard scratcher: a popular choice for cats that enjoy scratching cardboard. The material offers a different texture than sisal and can provide extra stimulation for cats.

Even the best scratching post will remain unused if your cat does not find the location attractive. Place the scratching furniture in a spot where your cat likes to spend time, for example next to their favorite sleeping spot, in the living room, or near a surface they are already scratching, such as the sofa or a chair.

In addition to grooming their nails and stretching, cats often scratch to release stress. Stress can occur when seeing unfamiliar people, in busy environments, or in small spaces. Therefore, place a scratching post or scratch pad near the entrance, in the living room, and in narrow hallways.

It can help to offer scratching options in several different locations.

1. A large cat
Preferably choose a stable scratching post with wide sisal poles that is tall enough for your cat to fully stretch out.

2. An active, young cat
Go for a scratching post that also encourages climbing and playing. Multiple platforms, a hideaway, and a play ball provide extra fun for your active cat.

3. Older cats or cats with limited mobility
Go for an easily accessible scratching board or perhaps a low scratching post with a low platform or hideaway to rest in.
